c. 1850 Firth and Pond style 5 guitar (James Ashborn)

This Firth and Pond guitar was built in the factory of James Ashborn around 1850. It is one of a small number of style 5 Ashborn guitars known. Ashborn’s factory was in Wolcottville, CT and was the biggest competitor to CF Martin during the mid 19th century. This specific example is in remarkable condition for being a century and a half old. It arrived in my shop needing a handful of repairs typical to old guitars that have been neglected for some time, but nothing beyond routine. The biggest job on this instrument was saving the original bridge, which was badly broken. Thankfully I was able to restore it to proper structural integrity and utility. I also had to have the original tuners repaired, having a new crown gear and barrel made for the A string. The guitar is entirely original.
