vintage guitar and mandolin tuners...

CF Martin style 0 ukulele I'm guessing from the tuners on this Martin style 0 uke that it is post war, perhaps the 1950s, and it is 100% original.  The style 0 uke is all mahogany with the exception of the fretboard, which is brazilian rosewood.  This little uke is in very good condition both cosmetically and structurally.  It has a few dings and dents here and there from handling and playing but nothing serious.  Each of the sides has had crack repairs in the past.  The cracks are visible as hairlines but the repairs are well done, level, stable and tight.  Otherwise it's in great shape, no top or back cracks.  The frets are in good shape as is the fretboard and tuners, and there is no real finish wear of any kind.  The action is easy and it has the plucky sound and volume that these ukes are known for.  It comes with it's original canvas gig bag case.  What does the average vintage guitar buyer do when he has acquired all the guitars he wants?  He buys a vintage uke!  Price...$500 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)
1967 Martin D-28 SN.  222750 It's plenty hard to come by nice condition examples of 40 year old guitars these days.  Often "very good condition" means still accepting repairs, cracks, bad neck angle, replaced parts and all that stuff that we'd rather not see.  Not with this guitar.  This '66 D-28 is 100% original and completely un-messed-with.  100% crack free.  All the original interior bracing is present, secure and intact including the maple bridge plate.   The all original finish is in excellent condition overall and while it does show crazing and some dings and nicks from handling there's no pickwear and only the slightest handling wear on the neck finish in the first position.  I think one of the things I like most about this guitar is that there is no strap pin installed in the heel.  The neck is straight and shows only the slightest relief under string tension.  The top shows a little belly but nothing more than is typical for a 40 year old Martin dread and the bridge is securely glued in place.  There is a small amount of finish loss at the front edge of the bridge from a previous removal and reglue job but this is minor.  The guitar boasts gorgeous old brazilian rosewood back and sides with that old brick-red color that we all wish we could find in brazilian rosewood today.  The sitka spruce top has ambered to a nice vintage color.  The pickguard has been reglued as it was lifting when this guitar came into the shop and the neck was reset and refretted and the the bridge reglued.  The guitar now plays with action measuring 6/64" at the low E 12th fret and 5/64" at the high E with a full 1/8" of saddle showing.  It responds well to flatpicking or fingerstyle but is particularly good when flat picked.  You can dig into this one hard without it losing it's tonal character.  It's voice is a giant growl with volume that you have to raise your voice to talk over.  The guitar comes with it's original hardshell green-lined case, which is also in good condition thoug it shows a bit more wear than the guitar.  Price...$6500 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)

1947 Martin 000-18 SN.  101893 With a fresh neck reset and set up this 60 year old 000 is ready for another 60 years of making music.  This lightweight guitar has all of it's original parts and finish though the back and sides have been oversprayed (the top has NOT been oversprayed or had the finish altered or repaired in any way).  The overspray The bridge pins are replaced.  The top shows a re-glued center seam separation (tight, level and stable, professional job) and an older pickguard crack repair that is solid.  All of the original bracing is intact and solid without repair or alteration including the maple bridge plate.  The top is very flat.  There are no back or side cracks, repaired or otherwise.  The neck is straight and solid, no heel or headstock issues.  The guitar has some playwear through the top finish at the treble side of the fretboard extension but this is in the surface only and the wood is not worn or wash-boarded.  This area could easily be touched up for the new owner if the buyer wanted it done.  The same kind of finish wear from play time shows adjacent to the pickguard by the high E string and there are a few strum marks here and there but overall the cosmetic presentation of this guitar is very good.  There was once a pickup in the guitar with a jack at the end pin hole, this has been plugged and redrilled for a standard end pin.  As previously stated, the guitar has just had a neck reset and set up here in the shop and is in top playing order.  The frets got a light level and recrown and polish as part of the neck reset so they are in great shape, and the fretboard is in great shape as well.  The action is set at 6/64" at the low E 12th fret and 5/64" at the high E with a solid 1/8" (slightly more on the treble side) of saddle showing above the slot.  The guitar sounds great, crisp and woody.  Plenty of bass but the real treat for your ears with this guitar is the midrange and trebles.  There's great volume in the midrange and the trebles are very loud and chimy, this is what people buy vintage mahogany to hear.  The guitar responds well to fingerstyle play but is great under a flat pick as well.  The guitar comes with a new hardshell case.  Price...$5200 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)

1962 Martin D-28 SN. 186528 This great old D-28 has been refinished at some time in it's past.  The refin is well done and thin so it's hard to hold that against the guitar when you actually play it and hear it's giant voice.  The guitar conforms to typical specs for a D-28 of the period.  Beautiful brazilian rosewood back and sides, sitka spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fretboard and bridge.  The face of the headstock has it's original finish and therefore the original headstock decal remains.  All of the bracing is original and intact and doesn't appear to have ever needed any repair or regluing.  The original maple bridge plate is present and intact. The bridge, fretboard, bridge pins and tuners are also original.  The center seam of the top looks to have been reglued at some point, a professional job with the seam now tight, level and stable.  There is what appears to possibly be a 2" top crack right at the edge of the binding on the lower bout of the treble side but it's hard to tell whether it goes all the way through.  If it does it's right against the kerfed lining underneath the top and it's firm when you press on it so it's got nowhere to go.  The pickguard is replaced with a guard made from Deep River Vintage Supply tortoise material.  There are no back or side cracks though there is a plugged strap pin hole on the bass side near the neck block.  The guitar has had a neck reset sometime in the recent past and the neck angle is perfect.  The action is currently set low, measuring 5/64" at the low E and 4/64" at the high E, this with a solid 1/8" of saddle showing.  The neck is very straight and the frets were recrowned when the guitar arrived in the shop. The guitar plays great for fingerstyle at the moment with no buzz anywhere.  It can be strummed pick style without buzz but aggressive bluegrass style flatpicking brings out a bit of buzz so if the new owner would like the action can be raised slightly to facilitate heavy flat picking.  I mentioned before that the guitar has a giant voice, it has great volume and an open, woody tone.  The bass is as solid as you could want from a D-28 with strong midrange and clear, bell-like treble.  Needs nothing, ready to go.  The guitar comes with what appears to be it's original green-lined hardshell case.  Price:  $5000 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)

1968 Martin 0-16 NY SN. 238661 The 0-16 NY was built to pretty much the same specs (in terms of wood chioce and bracing) as the 0-18 of the late 20s.  Mahogany back and sides, spruce top (sitka), mahogany neck and brazilian rosewood bridge and fretboard.  This 0-16 NY sounds every bit as good as the nicest old 0-18s do.  This guitar has had a pickup installed under the saddle (the the jack in the end block) but otherwise it is all original with no repairs or significant wear at all.  In fact, it almost looks unplayed.  The guitar is entirely crack free and the finish completely original and intact with very little sign that it was ever subjected to any harsh words let alone harsh handling.  The finish on the top is nicely crazed and ambered.  The original Waverly WG-31 tuners are present, super clean and mechanically good.  All of the original interior bracing is intact, stable and free from any damage or repair including the bridge plate.  The neck has a nut width of 1 7/8" with a 2 5/16" pin spacing at the bridge.  The neck is very straight with little relief.  It doesn't appear to have ever had a neck reset and it doesn't need one.  The neck angle is good and the action low with saddle left.  The action currently measures 6/64" at the low E 12th fret and 4/64" at the high E and plays with no buzz all over the neck.  The sound lends itself particularly well to fingerstyle play.  More volume than you'd expect from such a small box (unless you've played other 0-16 NYers).  Well balanced with plenty of bass, great midrange and bright trebles.  The guitar has sustain clear through 'till tomorrow.  It is truly one of the better fingerstyle guitars I've played.  That said, it can be strummed for vocal accompaniment and provides a pleasant, old-timey sound.  You will not be disappointed.  This guitar comes with a newer Martin hardshell case that is just *slightly* oversized but protects the guitar well.  Price: $2250 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)

1968 Martin 00-28C SN. 236345 Of all of the various configurations of Martin nylon string guitars (00-18 G, 00-28G, 00-16C, 00-18C, 00-28C and 000-28C) the 00-28 C model is typically the best sounding of the bunch.  Solid brazilian rosewood back and sides with a sitka spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony fretboard and bridge.  This particular example has had it's nut and (possibly) saddle replaced at some time in the past but all else is original.  The top and sides are crack free, the back has 3 well repaired cracks and 2 short hairlines that appear to be in the finish only. The top finish shows typical crazing througout  and a little strum wear below the high E string.  There are an average number of dings and finish chips on the top but nothing more than is typical for a guitar of this age. The back and side finish is very clean with very little handling or play wear of any kind.  There is finish wear on the neck in the first position that is through to the wood but can be easily sealed. The neck has a full, round profile with a 2" nut width.  The action is quite comfortable with 3/32" of saddle left to lower the action if the new owner would prefer.  The tone of the guitar is rich and deep, good bass and sweet trebles, great folkie sound and good volume.  The guitar comes with it's original blue-lined hardshell case.  Price:  $3000 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)

1958 Martin D-18 SN. 162103 Another excellent 50s Martin.  This D-18 conforms to all the typical specs of the period and is in excellent and 100% original condition.  The back and sides show typical dings and chips here and there but considerably less than typical wear for a 50 year old guitar.  The sitka spruce top has aged beautifully to a nice amber color, the top has one crack (1" in length) below the bridge and just to the bass side of the center seam.  The crack is repaired and is tight, level and stable.  The top shows very little play wear of any kind.  The original brazilian rosewood bridge appears to have been reglued at some time and there are a few lacquer chips at the front edge that have been touched up and are barely noticable.  The original tortoise pickguard is flat and secure, no lifting or curling and no pickguard crack.  The neck is in excellent condition as well with only slight finish wear in one or two spots.  The neck is straight, no twist or bow.  The original ivory nut is present and the original Kluson Deluxe tuners are clean and function smoothly.  All internal bracing is original, secure and intact without any repairs (none necessary) including the maple bridge plate.  The frets have just had a level and recrown so they are like new and have plenty of crown left.  The guitar also had a neck reset while in the shop so the angle is good and playability excellent.  The action measures 7/64" at the low E 12th fret and 6/64" at the high E with a solid 1/8" of saddle showing above the slot.  The guitar's voice is huge, great volume and the crisp, cutting tone for which the D-18 is prized.  The original case is included and is in very good condition.  It's harder and harder to come by examples this nice. Price: $6,500 (CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS)
